Imaging techniques in cardiology 3: coronarography, coronary angiography, electrophysiological examination
1. Big picture
This topic has two invasive cardiology tools:
| Tool | Main question | Main clinical use |
|---|---|---|
| Coronarography / invasive coronary angiography | “Where is the coronary stenosis or occlusion?” | Acute coronary syndrome, stable coronary artery disease with high-risk findings, planning PCI/CABG |
| Electrophysiological examination / EP study | “What is the arrhythmia mechanism and where is the circuit/focus?” | SVT, WPW, VT, unexplained syncope, catheter ablation planning |
Core exam idea: Coronary angiography treats blocked coronary arteries; EP study diagnoses and treats electrical circuits. In emergency ACS, coronary angiography often immediately continues into percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). In arrhythmias, EP study often immediately continues into catheter ablation.
