Important dermatomes and reflex-segments

1. Big picture

Dermatomes and reflex segments are essential for localizing lesions in the spinal roots, spinal cord, and peripheral nervous system. In the final exam, the examiner usually wants you to connect three things:

sensory territory + muscle weakness + reflex change = affected root/segment

For example, a patient with pain radiating to the little toe, reduced sensation there, positive Lasègue sign, and absent Achilles reflex most likely has an S1 radiculopathy.

This topic is not just anatomy. It is a clinical localization tool.
