Types of sensation and their receptors
1. Big picture
Sensation is the way the nervous system detects external and internal stimuli, converts them into nerve impulses, and carries them to the brain. For the final exam, the key is not to memorize every receptor histologically, but to know:
-
Which sensory modality is tested
-
Which receptor detects it
-
Which pathway carries it
-
What kind of lesion causes loss of that modality
-
How to examine it clinically
The uploaded lecture divides sensation mainly into:
-
Superficial sensation = vital / protopathic sensation
-
Deep sensation = gnostic / proprioceptive / epicritic sensation
-
Plus subconscious proprioception, which goes to the cerebellum through spinocerebellar pathways.
