Epilepsy, driver’s license and limitations in certain professions

1. Big picture

This topic is not mainly about diagnosing epilepsy; it is about risk assessment and social consequences. The examiner wants you to understand that epilepsy can endanger the patient and others when a seizure occurs during driving, public transport work, work at heights, work with dangerous machines, or other safety-sensitive jobs.

The key principle is:

Epilepsy does not automatically mean permanent prohibition from driving or working. The decision depends on seizure freedom, seizure type, treatment adherence, side effects, neurological opinion, and the legal rules of the country.

For Hungary, fitness to drive is based on medical/legal assessment.
