Management of normal labour
1. Big picture
Management of normal labour means safely supporting physiological birth while continuously checking that labour remains normal.
The examiner wants you to show this logic:
Normal labour management =
support physiology
+ monitor mother
+ monitor fetus
+ document progress
+ prevent complications
+ intervene early if labour becomes abnormal
Normal labour should not be over-medicalized, but it must never be unmanaged. The goal is:
- safe vaginal birth
- good maternal experience
- early recognition of fetal compromise
- prevention of postpartum haemorrhage
- avoidance of unnecessary cesarean or operative delivery
- rapid escalation if labour stops being normal
The practical exam framework is:
Admission assessment
↓
First stage: observe progress and fetal/maternal condition
↓
Second stage: safe birth of baby
↓
Third stage: safe delivery of placenta and prevention of bleeding
↓
Fourth stage: early postpartum observation
