The primary examination and care of the healthy newborn.
1. Big picture
The primary examination and care of a healthy newborn means: confirm successful adaptation after birth, detect congenital anomalies or danger signs early, provide routine preventive care, start feeding, and prepare safe follow-up.
In the oral exam, organize your answer chronologically:
Birth → dry/warm/stimulate → assess breathing and tone → Apgar
→ skin-to-skin and feeding → prophylaxis → full newborn exam
→ screening → discharge criteria and parental education
A healthy newborn should be pink, warm, breathing comfortably, active, well perfused, feeding, and passing urine/stool appropriately.
